These Fields and Hills Beyond Recall

What many persons visiting Barbados don't know is that on most Sunday mornings and afternoons there are nature hikes organized by the Barbados National Trust under the name Hike Barbados.

These hikes are open to anyone interested in attending and are completely free of cost! [donations are welcomed]

The initiative reportedly began in 1983 with just twelve hikers and is now attended by approximately 8,000 people every year.

It is not a "locals only" exercise. Visitors are welcomed and encouraged to come and get a good look at the island under the guidance of the knowledgeable hike leaders.

Hike Barbados caters to every level of hiker. If you go in the morning, there are four hiking groups to choose from. The easiest being the "Stop 'n' Stare" grade (c.6 miles), next are the "1 Medium" and "Fast Medium" grades (c.9 miles) then there is the grueling "Grin 'n' Bear" grade (c.12 miles). In the afternoon, however, the morning's "Stop 'n' Stare" route is repeated in one large group.

If you think that your fitness level may leave a little to be desired than the first grade is the choice for you. it is more of a leisurely stroll even though you may encounter a steep hill or two. Just know that Barbados is a relatively flat island so there are no mountains to make the hike too strenuous. For those armed with thighs of steel and a love for that gainful exercise pain then test your mettle with the "Grin 'n' Bear" group. Those guys tear through the countryside non-stop for the full 12 miles. It isn't for the faint of heart! All others ... just fall in where you may.

Having been on a couple of the hikes, first in the "1 Medium" group and then the "Stop 'n' Stare", I would recommend the "Stop 'n' Stare" for those who are more interested with getting a chance to look at their surroundings and really appreciate the beauty of Barbadian landscape.

If you're in any faster group, then you may spend a lot more time focusing on where you're stepping and digging in to get through tough terrain to notice what is going on around you very much but hey, I'm not joining any fitness competitions anytime soon so, maybe it's just me.

In any case, these hikes are a great way to get the blood flowing and start your day on a really good note. So if you're in Barbados, get to that meeting point and walk the paths less traveled.

Information regarding the hikes is available via booklet or you can check online at www.hikebarbados.com or www.barbadosnationaltrust.org.
